What is Mechanical Engineering and Why is it Important?

Mechanical engineering focuses on the design, manufacturing, and maintenance of mechanical systems using physics and mathematical principles.  It is one of the broadest branches of engineering, being utilized in almost all aspects of industry.  Some of the more prevalent industries include automotive (27.8%), manufacturing & robotics (13.3%), architectural (10.5%), aerospace (4.15%), oil & gas (3.58%), biomedical (2.87%), and construction (2.79%) (Hidalgo et al.).

Mechanical engineers are a major driving force behind innovations in our modern life.  Utilizing tools such as computer-aided design (CAD), manufacturing (CAM), and engineering (CAE), they consistently expand the boundaries of what machines and technology are capable of, leading to meaningful contributions of functionality and accessibility for numerous industries.
